Our first annual Teacher of the Year award was given to Leonard DeLoma, 5th Grade ELA teacher of Odell Elementary. DeLoma’s student, Teagan Robinson, nominated DeLoma by writing an amazing essay of why her teacher deserved the reward. Jayson Orlandini, JOI chair for MCOC, and Stewart Mallard, Club President, were excited to present Leonard with the award and a few gifts for Teagan too!

Teagan's Winning Essay
“Why my teacher deserves to be Teacher of The Year”
My name is Teagan Robinson. I attend Odell Elementary School in Cabarrus County and am in the fifth grade. I believe my 4th and 5th grade ELA teacher, Mr. DeLoma, deserves to be Teacher of the Year for many different reasons. Before I started Odell Elementary school I did not really like reading but I still did well in school. Now I love reading and enjoy it a lot more than I ever have!
I used to be in the average reading groups but because of Mr. DeLoma’s guidance I have grown to the advance reading group. He has a unique way of teaching ELA topics through using his guitars. He uses music to deepen our thinking about stories and poems. He also uses current event articles to help us understand what is going on in the world with discussions and questions. He uses many types of rewards and excitement to motivate us to keep learning and doing well.
Everyday Mr. DeLoma plays with our homeroom at recess. It doesn’t matter if we are indoor or outdoor he will play either basketball or football. He is fun and shows fairness in the classroom, hallways, lunches, and recess. Mr. DeLoma can find a connection with every kid no matter their personality, differences and interests. He makes the time to get to know all of us throughout the year.
Because of Mr. DeLoma, ELA has been my favorite subject the past two years. I am going to miss him when I go to middle school next year. My 4th and 5th grade teacher, Mr. DeLomadeserves to be honored with Teacher of the Year award.
Thank you,
Teagan Ann Robinson
